Kenya Safari Planning Guide
Plan wildlife regions, travel timing and a sensible route in Kenya.
The Masai Mara is a prominent safari destination, but Kenya also offers Amboseli and other ecosystems with different scenery and wildlife.
Editorial note: This is an independent research and planning guide, not a firsthand trip report. Conditions, availability and operator policies can change.
What matters most
Consider whether your priority is migration season, elephants, family travel or a multi-reserve itinerary.
Evaluate the trip as a whole: wildlife experience, location, number of nights, logistics, comfort, guiding, total cost and flexibility. A safari that looks attractive on a brochure may not be the best fit for your travel dates or priorities.
How to compare your options
- Write down your travel dates, party size, approximate budget and three most important experiences.
- Compare itineraries by nights in each destination, transfer times, accommodation location and included activities.
- Ask for explicit exclusions, payment schedules, cancellation conditions and who supports you during the trip.
- Confirm time-sensitive details with the operator and official destination sources.
Questions to ask before booking
- Where exactly will we stay, and why is that location suitable for our dates?
- Are vehicles, guides, transfers and activities private or shared?
- Which park fees, meals, drinks, flights and gratuities are included?
- What happens if a lodge or transfer needs to change?
- What are the deposit, refund and cancellation terms?
Recommended next step
Ask how the operator connects the reserves and whether drives are private.
